Zuma admitted to KZN hospital after Msinga event
The former president was taken by ambulance from the Midlands on Tuesday night, and no word on his condition has been given.
Former president Jacob Zuma was admitted to a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday night after attending an event in Msinga, in the province’s Midlands.
As SABC News reported on Wednesday, Zuma was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The broadcaster said his condition was unknown at that stage. No further detail on his condition has been given.
Zuma, 84, leads the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, the movement he launched in December 2023 and which he has led through two national election cycles. He remains the party’s most visible figure, and his public appearances draw crowds across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
Msinga sits in the uMzinyathi district, roughly 200km from Durban and among the more rural stretches of the province. Events there involve long road travel, and the ambulance transfer indicates he was moved from the area rather than treated where he appeared.
This is not the first time in recent years that Zuma’s health has been the subject of public attention. He has been treated at hospitals in Pretoria and Durban in that period, and each admission has prompted the same question from supporters and opponents alike: how serious is it, and what does it mean for the party he leads?
For now, the honest answer is that no one outside his immediate circle appears to know. The office of the former president has not issued a public statement carried in the material available. The MK Party has not given a condition update. The hospital has not been named.
Ordinary South Africans will notice two things. The first is that a hospital admission for a man of Zuma’s age and profile is a matter of genuine public interest, not private gossip, because he is a former head of state and the leader of a party with seats in the National Assembly. The second is that the country has a well-established habit of finding out the basics of a public figure’s health through leaks and ambulance sightings rather than through a clear statement from a family, an office or a party.
That is a gap this story cannot close on its own. What can be said is what is known: the admission happened on Tuesday night, it followed a public event, and it involved an ambulance.
SABC News, which first reported the admission, said it had reliably learned of it. The Enquirer has not independently confirmed the admission or the circumstances around it, and will report any confirmed update on his condition when it is available.
