The Mogwase Regional Court has sentenced 45-year-old Thabang Nkwe to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of 42-year-old Monyeki William.

The killing happened on 25 August 2025 at Mabele-a-Podi village near Mogwase, in the North West. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) account, the two men were involved in an argument at a tavern. Nkwe allegedly went home, returned with a firearm and shot William.

Sergeant Ntesang Molefe arrested Nkwe on the same day. He remained in custody after being denied bail. The court handed down the sentence on 9 October 2026.

Brigadier Selala Pheto, the Acting Sub-District Commissioner, congratulated Sergeant Molefe, the prosecution team, witnesses and everyone who contributed to securing the conviction and sentence, commending their dedication and teamwork.

Pheto warned the community that firearms do not resolve disputes and should never be taken to taverns or other places where alcohol is consumed. He urged people to resolve conflicts peacefully and responsibly, warning that alcohol-related disputes can escalate into violence and cost innocent lives.
