You can read this entire paper without telling us anything. Every story is free and nothing is behind a sign-in. You only have an account if you chose to create one.
If you sign in
You sign in through Google or Facebook. We never see your password, you type it into them, not into us. They confirm who you are and pass us the following, which is all we keep:

| The date you signed up and last signed in | To remove accounts that are never used again. |
What we do not do
- We do not sell your details, and we do not share them. Not with advertisers, not with data brokers, not with anybody.
- We do not track what you read. A story you save is a story you chose to save. We build no reading profile of you.
- We do not ask for anything we do not need. No phone number, no date of birth, no address. When you sign in we ask Google and Facebook for your name and email address only, nothing else on your account is visible to us.
- We do not email you anything you did not ask for. If you are not on the newsletter, we do not email you.
Deleting your account
Go to your own page and press delete. Your name, email address and saved list are removed from our records immediately. You do not have to ask anybody's permission and you do not have to explain why. If you would rather we did it for you, write to .
Your rights
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act you may ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete it. Write to and we will answer. If you are not satisfied with how we handled it, you may complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
Cookies
If you sign in we set one cookie so that you stay signed in, and a short-lived one during the sign-in itself to keep it secure. That is what they are for and they do nothing else. We run no advertising or tracking cookies on this site. Signing out removes the sign-in cookie.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Delete the account and it is gone. An account that has not been signed into for two years is removed.
