Police and army say they are ready for the 2026 local elections
NATJOINTS and PROVJOINTS are operational in all provinces, voting stations have been assessed and daily security briefings will run through the electoral period.
The Security Cluster says it is ready for the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure and its provincial counterparts fully operational across all provinces.
SAPS Deputy National Commissioner for Policing and NATJOINTS Co-Chairperson, Lt Gen Tebello Mosikili, briefed the media alongside SANDF Co-Chairperson Lt Gen Siphiwe Sangweni and SAPS Head of Corporate Communications Maj Gen Nonkululeko Phokane.
According to the Government of South Africa’s account of the briefing, voting stations have been assessed and intelligence-led deployments are ready to respond.
“The responsibility to protect our democracy is shared,” Mosikili said. “Let us work together to ensure that these elections are conducted freely, fairly and safely.”
Daily NATJOINTS media briefings will continue throughout the electoral period.
The briefing set out readiness and arrangements rather than any specific incident or threat. No further operational detail was given in the government’s public account.
