Gauteng police roll out show of force and walk voting stations ahead of 2026 local elections
The provincial joint operations structure, co-chaired by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, paraded its readiness and assessed security at voting stations and the Alberton results centre.
Gauteng’s provincial joint operations structure has staged a show of force and toured voting stations across the province as it sets out its security arrangements for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure, known as ProvJoints, is co-chaired by SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni and brings in the State Security Agency and the SANDF. According to the police service’s own account of the exercise, the show of force followed a media briefing and was intended to demonstrate what it called the collective readiness and commitment of law enforcement agencies to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections across Gauteng.
ProvJoints leadership then visited voting stations around the province and the Results Operations Centre in Alberton, where it assessed security arrangements. The stated purpose was to ensure that voters and Electoral Commission officials are safe, and feel safe, while exercising their democratic rights.
The police account does not set out how many officers took part, which voting stations were visited, or what, if anything, the assessments turned up. It gives no figures on deployments or on security incidents ahead of the elections.
What it does establish is that the province’s police, intelligence and defence structures are presenting a single coordinated front on election security, and that the results centre at Alberton is being treated as part of the security perimeter rather than only an administrative venue.
