Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni and the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, walked the Gauteng Results Operations Centre on 3 November 2026 as special voting moved into its second day.

The South African Police Service said the purpose of the visit was to assess police operational readiness and to ensure a safe and secure environment for the 2026 Local Government Elections.

At the centre, Mthombeni met Independent Electoral Commission officials and the SAPS members deployed there. The police service described the visit as part of ongoing efforts to provide support and to monitor progress on the second day of special voting.

Special voting allows registered voters who cannot reach their voting station on election day, including the elderly, the infirm and election officials on duty, to cast their ballots ahead of the main poll. The results operations centre is where the province’s results are to be received and processed.

The presence of the country’s top prosecutor alongside the provincial police commissioner at an electoral centre speaks to the role the National Prosecuting Authority is expected to play if disputes or complaints arise from the elections. The police service did not say in its statement what specific complaints or cases, if any, the two discussed.

The police service published three photographs from the visit. It did not give a figure for the number of officers deployed at the centre or across the province, and it did not detail what operational readiness checks were carried out.

What the statement does establish is that the two most senior figures in Gauteng policing and national prosecution were on site together, meeting the electoral body’s officials and the officers working the second day of special voting.

The Enquirer will keep following the security and prosecution arrangements around the 2026 Local Government Elections as the voting period continues.
