Three arrests in one Cape Town day as police seize ammunition, Mandrax and cocaine
Operation Prosper searches in Surrey Estate, Camelot and Mfuleni on Wednesday produced an imitation firearm, 52 rounds of ammunition and three separate drug seizures, SAPS says.
Three men were arrested in separate police searches across Cape Town on Wednesday, 7 October, with officers recovering an imitation firearm, 52 rounds of ammunition and three separate drug seizures, the South African Police Service said.
CapeTown ETC reported the arrests on 8 October, drawing on the SAPS account of the operations. The three searches were carried out by members of Operation Prosper, a police unit that acts on intelligence about identified premises, in Surrey Estate, Camelot and Mfuleni.
In Surrey Estate, in Manenberg, officers searched a premises after following up intelligence. They confiscated an imitation firearm and 52 rounds of ammunition, and arrested a 24-year-old man. He faces charges relating to the illegal possession of ammunition and the possession of an imitation firearm, and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged.
A second search, at a premises in Queen Guinevere, Camelot, led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man after police allegedly found 50 Mandrax tablets inside the house. He faces a charge of possession of drugs and is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court.
In Shire Street, Mfuleni, officers followed up information about suspected drug activity at a premises. During the search they allegedly found 15 small plastic packets of crystal meth, two-and-a-half Mandrax tablets and 16 plastic packets of cocaine. A 45-year-old man was arrested and faces a charge of possession of drugs. He is also expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court.
SAPS said the operations formed part of ongoing efforts to remove firearms and drugs from vulnerable communities in the Western Cape.
For readers outside the province, the three suburbs sit in different parts of the metro. Manenberg, which includes Surrey Estate, is a historically dense and heavily policed area on the Cape Flats. Camelot is a small pocket near Blue Downs on the eastern side. Mfuleni is a fast-growing township further out along the N2 corridor. All three fall under police stations and courts that carry some of the heaviest drug and firearm caseloads in the country.
The ammunition seizure is the detail that will stand out to officers working this beat. Fifty-two rounds is a working quantity, not a handful left over from a single incident. An imitation firearm, meanwhile, is treated as a serious recovery in its own right, because a replica used in a robbery creates the same fear as a real weapon and is charged under the same section of the law.
Mandrax remains the most commonly seized tablet drug in the Western Cape, and the quantities here, 50 tablets in one house and a small number in another, are consistent with the retail end of that trade rather than with a wholesale operation. Crystal meth and cocaine in small plastic packets point to the same street-level pattern.
What the arrests do not yet show is what happens next. The three men have been arrested and are expected to be charged, but none has appeared in court and no bail decision has been recorded. In South African law an arrest is not a conviction, and the charges against each man still have to be put to a magistrate.
The cases now move to two courts. The Athlone Magistrates’ Court will handle the Surrey Estate matter, and the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court will handle both the Camelot and Mfuleni matters. Court appearance dates have not been given.
