Four suspects are in police custody on firearm and gang-related charges after operations on Sunday night in Heather Park, Hanover Park and Bonteheuwel, the South African Police Service said.

A 16-year-old boy is among them. Police say members of Operation Prosper arrived on Bordeaux Street in Heather Park and gave chase, and that the search that followed turned up a prohibited firearm. The teenager was arrested.

The same operation moved on to Masop Street in Heather Park, where a 33-year-old man was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Police say a firearm and 44 rounds of ammunition were found at his premises.

Both were detained at Kleinvlei SAPS. Police say they will make their first appearances at Bluedowns Magistrate’s Court once charged.

In Hanover Park, members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed on a tracing operation arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with an attempted murder case. He will appear at Athlone Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.

Police say intelligence was then received about a firearm at Garda Palace in Hanover Park. On arrival at the address, members conducted a search and found a prohibited firearm. An enquiry docket was opened and the firearm was booked in as an exhibit and sent for further processing at Philippi SAPS.

In Bonteheuwel, Anti-Gang Unit members arrested a 23-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a stop and search on Avocardo Street. He will appear at Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court once charged.

The arrests rest on police statements. No court has yet tested the charges, and the suspects have not had the opportunity to answer them in a courtroom. The 16-year-old’s case will follow the route the law sets for a child in conflict with the law, and police have not said what that route will be.

What the operation did not do is answer the question that sits behind every gun seizure on these streets. Four suspects were taken off the street in one night, and the firearms they are accused of holding are now exhibits. Residents in Heather Park, Hanover Park and Bonteheuwel live with the daily arithmetic of how many guns the police find against how many they do not, and one night’s haul is not a measure of either.

The 44 rounds found at the Masop Street premises are the detail that stands out. A prohibited firearm is one thing. Ammunition in that quantity suggests something more than a single weapon kept at home, and police have not said what they believe it was for. The enquiry docket at Philippi SAPS will carry that question forward.

The Anti-Gang Unit’s presence in Hanover Park for a tracing operation tied to an attempted murder case points to the work that does not make a seizure list. Tracing a suspect in an attempted murder is slower and less visible than a street arrest, and it is the part of the operation that will matter most to whoever was attacked.

Police have not released the names of any of the four suspects, and The Enquirer is not publishing them. The 16-year-old cannot be identified.

The court dates will follow once the suspects are charged. The Enquirer will report what the courts record when the appearances happen, and what police say about the origin of the firearms found on Sunday night.

For now the record is this. Four people were arrested across three areas on one night. Two prohibited firearms were found, one of them at a house with 44 rounds of ammunition. A third firearm was booked in as an exhibit. Three courts will see the cases, and the streets where the operations happened will see whether the seizures change anything.
