Two new Limpopo police stations open as Waterberg counts its stock theft cases
Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola open Bakenberg and Villa Nora stations on Tuesday, then lead a crime prevention imbizo with traditional leaders and residents.
Two newly built police stations open in the Waterberg District in Limpopo on Tuesday, and the South African Police Service says the point of them is service delivery in rural and previously underserved communities.
The Bakenberg and Villa Nora police stations will be officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo, together with SAPS top management led by the National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, and the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers.
In a statement issued on Monday, SAPS said the joint initiative “aims to improve service delivery, particularly in rural and previously underserved communities, thus enhancing the safety and security of residents”.
The same delegation will lead a Ministerial Crime Prevention Community Imbizo. SAPS describes it as a platform for “meaningful, constructive engagement” among its leadership, traditional leaders, community members and key stakeholders on combating and preventing crime.
The focus areas SAPS lists for the imbizo are Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, stock theft and other prevalent crimes affecting communities within the Waterberg District.
This account is drawn from the government’s own summary of the programme published by SAnews (South African Government News Agency) at https://www.sanews.gov.za/south-africa/opening-limpopo-police-stations-aid-service-delivery and not from the operational record of either station. The statement does not give the cost of the buildings, their staffing, the number of officers deployed, or the crime figures behind the choice of Bakenberg and Villa Nora.
