Police in the Eastern Cape’s Joe Gqabi District arrested three suspects in separate crime prevention and rural safety operations on Thursday, 15 October 2026, according to a South African Police Service media statement from the office of the provincial commissioner.

Members attached to Tlokoeng SAPS ran Operation Shanela II, visiting five liquor outlets, two schools, five ATMs, two central business district areas, a playground, two churches and a clinic. The statement says officers also carried out stop and search, vehicle checkpoint operations, sector and route patrols along the R56, and crime prevention initiatives.

One male suspect was arrested for possession of drugs. Suspected tik sachets were confiscated and the case remains under investigation. He will appear before the Mount Fletcher Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 16 October 2026.

In a separate operation the same day, police conducted a Rural Safety Operation in the Ekhephini area aimed at preventing and reducing stock theft, increasing police visibility in farming communities and strengthening rural safety. Activities included crime prevention patrols, vehicle patrols, stop and search operations, farm visits and responding to complaints, covering farming areas in Cullenswood, Bottleneck and Langkloof.

Two farmworkers were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of meat from a sheep belonging to a local farmer, which they allegedly slaughtered, the statement says. They were detained at Barkly East SAPS for further investigation and will appear before the Barkly Magistrate’s Court soon.

The statement names Constable Sisonke Marela as the enquiry contact. It is a summary of the operations rather than the full case record, and no further detail on the investigations was provided.
