Detectives across Ekurhuleni arrested 178 suspects on Saturday 17 October while tracing them, the South African Police Service says, in a weekend operation that ran from Friday 16 October until Sunday morning, 18 October 2026.

The arrests span a wide range of charges. Among the 178, SAPS lists six suspects for house robbery, one for attempted murder, three for armed robbery and one for common robbery. The largest single group is assault: 38 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, 57 for assault GBH in a domestic violence context, 11 for common assault, 10 for common assault in a domestic violence context, and 20 for gender-based violence domestic violence related cases.

Other suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, arson, malicious damage to property, kidnapping, pointing of a firearm, contempt of court, crimen injuria, fraud, bribery, perjury, house breakings, business burglary, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and public drinking.

The operation was run by SAPS together with other law enforcement agencies in the Ekurhuleni policing precincts, with a focus on priority crimes across the district. Liquor outlets were visited for compliance purposes and roadblocks were held, where stolen vehicles were recovered.

The Ekurhuleni District acting Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, said she was pleased with the persistent efforts of members in the fight against crime and in bringing crime to a minimum in the district. She thanked the other security agencies for coming on board to make Ekurhuleni safer.

SAPS published the account as a media statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in Gauteng. It is a summary of the weekend’s operations rather than a charge sheet, and it does not set out the circumstances of the individual arrests, the courts in which the suspects will appear, or how many of those held remained in custody.

The statement carries enquiries to Sgt Maxwell Mabunda of the Ekurhuleni District.
