South African Police Service operations over the past week put 16 380 suspects behind bars, among them 2 165 wanted suspects traced and arrested across several provinces for violent crimes, as SAPS moved to intensify crime-fighting ahead of the festive season.

The National Safer Festive Season campaign was launched in Mpumalanga on Monday and runs alongside the ongoing Operation Shanela. SAPS says heightened visibility will be maintained in identified hotspot areas to prevent crime, enforce the law and maintain public order.

In line with the Presidential Four-Point Plan on gender-based violence and femicide, police arrested 169 suspects for rape, 155 for murder and 140 for attempted murder during the reporting period. Officers also recovered and removed 164 illegal firearms from circulation, and confiscated 17 277 rounds of ammunition and 760 dangerous weapons.

Intelligence-driven operations targeting drug manufacturing and distribution produced their own haul. Police say 3 373 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and a further 275 for dealing in drugs. On 6 October 2026 officers discovered a multi-million-rand mandrax laboratory in Hartbeespoort, North West, and arrested a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national and three women. Two days later, on 8 October 2026, another multi-million-rand drug laboratory was uncovered on a farm in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, where five South African nationals were arrested and mandrax and ecstasy tablets were seized.

In a separate intelligence-driven operation in Hout Bay, Western Cape, three suspects were arrested after police found 172 000 mandrax tablets, valued at approximately R10 million, concealed in a false compartment of a vehicle.

Working with the Department of Home Affairs, SAPS arrested 1 647 undocumented foreign nationals. A further 30 people were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng for offences including public violence, unlawful gatherings, obstruction and resisting arrest.

Other arrests recorded in the period include 1 700 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 998 for common assault, 661 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, 612 for illegal dealing in liquor, 517 for possession of a dangerous weapon, 364 for malicious damage to property, 100 for contravention of the Firearms Control Act, 88 for illegal possession of firearms, 47 for illicit mining, 41 for possession of illegal cigarettes and 14 for human trafficking.

Confiscations and recoveries included 18 807 litres of liquor, 48 hijacked or stolen vehicles and various types of drugs.

“These arrests and recoveries demonstrate SAPS’s continued commitment to disrupting criminal networks, tracing wanted suspects and removing illegal firearms and drugs from circulation through intelligence-led policing and coordinated law enforcement operations nationwide,” police said in a statement.

The account above is drawn from a South African Government News Agency (SAnews) report on the SAPS statement, published on 14 October 2026 and available at https://www.sanews.gov.za/south-africa/saps-intensifies-festive-season-crime-fighting-operations. It is a summary of the police statement rather than the underlying operational record, so the individual arrests and seizures it lists have not been independently verified.
