SARS gives employers until Saturday to file EMP501 or face penalties

The 2026 Employer Interim Reconciliation Declaration closes on 31 October, and the revenue service says submitting is not the same as finishing.

Employers who have not yet filed their 2026 Employer Interim Reconciliation Declaration, the EMP501, have until Saturday 31 October 2026 to submit it to the South African Revenue Service. SARS says late or inaccurate compliance may expose employers to penalties and interest.

The declaration covers payroll information for the six months from 1 March to 31 August 2026, including Pay-As-You-Earn, Unemployment Insurance Fund and Skills Development Levy amounts. Employers must also ensure that employee information and IRP5/IT3(a) certificates are accurate and complete.

In a statement issued on Thursday, SARS warned employers against leaving submissions until the final hours. It urged them to allow enough time to deal with validation errors, rejected submissions or discrepancies that could stop them meeting the deadline.

“Importantly, submission does not necessarily mean completion,” the statement said. After submitting an EMP501, employers should check their submission status and the PAYE Dashboard to confirm the reconciliation has been successfully processed.

SARS put its message to employers plainly: submit, verify and complete.

The deadline falls against the backdrop of the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, which set out a renewed focus on the sustainability of the country’s public finances. SARS framed employer reconciliation as part of that picture, describing it as more than a filing obligation and as an important part of the integrity of the revenue system.

“Every accurate declaration strengthens the quality of the information the tax system depends on and contributes to our country’s fiscal resilience,” the statement read.

The revenue service said it has been modernising tax administration to make compliance easier, and that the ease carries a clear expectation that employers meet their obligations. Enhancements for the current interim PAYE filing season include changes to EMP201 and EMP501, new source codes, revised validations and enhancements to e@syFile Employer.

SARS said its compliance approach is designed to make it easy for taxpayers to meet their obligations voluntarily, while detecting non-compliance and making it hard and costly. It thanked employers who have already filed and called on those with outstanding declarations to act now.
