Two municipal employees accused of defrauding the Dr Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality of more than R118,000 have appeared in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court.

Jessie Sasane Mmutle, 37, and Bonolo Aubrey Monnapula Loabile, 37, face charges of fraud and theft. They appeared on Monday, 12 October 2026, and were granted R1,000 bail each. Their case was remanded to 20 November 2026 for appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Vryburg.

The two were arrested the same day by members of the Mmabatho-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, following an investigation into allegations of fraud dating back to 2019.

According to the South African Police Service, the two are employed by the municipality’s Sports and Recreation department. They requested financial support from the municipality so they could take part in the South African Municipal Sports and Recreation Association event held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The municipality reportedly approved the request and paid R118,190 into a bank account on which the two were signatories.

It is alleged that they withdrew R5,000 for their personal use and transferred R118,190 into their own bank accounts.

The matter was reported to the Hawks for investigation. Following what police describe as an intensive investigation by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, the two were arrested and charged with fraud and theft.

Police enquiries are handled by Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu.

The account above is drawn from the South African Police Service media statement on the matter, which summarises the allegations and the court process rather than reproducing the case docket or the charge sheet. The allegations have not been tested in court.
