Former police general arrested over 100 rounds of SAPS ammunition as Mfazi murder probe widens
The 56-year-old, who left the service in 2009, was held after a search of his Centurion home that also turned up documents and electronic devices in the investigation into Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi's murder.
A 56-year-old former police general has been arrested for the unlawful possession of more than 100 rounds of South African Police Service ammunition, including R5 and 9mm rounds, SAPS said.
The arrest followed a search and seizure operation at his home in Centurion on 6 July 2026 by the SAPS National Cold Case Unit. Investigators also seized documents and electronic devices at the house which SAPS says are believed to be relevant to the investigation into the murder of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi.
The former general left the SAPS in 2009. According to the statement, there are no valid reasons for his possession of the SAPS-issued ammunition.
He faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition in contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, and was expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on the day of the statement.
The statement, issued by Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, does not name the arrested man, does not say what rank he held before leaving the service, and does not state how the ammunition or the seized items are connected to the Mfazi investigation. It records the arrest, the charge and the seizure, and no more than that.
