A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Durban Regional Court for raping his seven-year-old niece, the South African Police Service said.

The court sentenced him on Thursday, 29 October. The rape is a crime under South African law, and the sentence handed down reflects the seriousness with which the courts treat the sexual violation of a child.

The police account sets out what happened. On 31 October 2025, the man was entrusted with looking after his niece. He took advantage of that trust and violated the child. On the day of the incident he allegedly forced her into his bedroom, where he raped her. The child later told her grandmother what had happened.

The matter was reported at Chatsworth police station, where a case of rape was registered. The Chatsworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and arrested the man. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape.

A life term is the heaviest sentence a South African court can impose short of the death penalty, which the country abolished. It means the man will spend the rest of his life in prison unless a court later decides otherwise.

The case turned on the child’s account to her grandmother and the work of the FCS unit, a specialist police division set up to investigate crimes against children and vulnerable people. The unit’s involvement in a case like this is standard, and its investigation led to the arrest and eventual conviction.

The SAPS statement carried the hashtag #EndGBVF, the national campaign against gender-based violence and femicide. The rape of a child by a relative inside the family home is one of the forms of violence the campaign is meant to confront, and the sentence is a reminder that the courts treat it as such.

The Enquirer has reported the facts as the police released them. The man’s name has not been made public, and this paper is not publishing it. The child’s identity is also protected.

The Enquirer will follow the case if any appeal is lodged.
