The South African Police Service has flagged a fake video circulating on social media, saying the photograph used in it was taken a few months ago during the confirmation of ranks of newly appointed members.

The police posted the warning on X on Tuesday, asking members of the public who have published, seen or received the video to ignore it and to stop sharing it.

The service did not say in the post what the video shows, who is behind it, or what it is being used to claim. It also did not say how widely it has spread.

What the police did confirm is the origin of the image at the centre of it. The photograph, according to the service, comes from a rank-confirmation ceremony held some months back, not from whatever event the video presents it as.

The warning carries the service’s standard appeal on social media conduct, under the tags #DeleteDontShare and #ResponsibleSocialMediaUse.
