Police have traced and arrested a 45-year-old man they had circulated as a person of interest in the Hoopstad murder investigation, the South African Police Service said in a statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Free State.

The man was arrested in Bloemhof on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. The arrest follows a stabbing on Saturday, 4 October 2026.

According to the police account, an argument broke out that day between the suspect and a 37-year-old man, after the man allegedly insulted the suspect and his family. The suspect then confronted him, and during the confrontation the man was allegedly physically assaulted and stabbed in the neck before the suspect fled the scene.

Isaac Moeketsi Veldskoon, 37, was declared deceased on the scene.

The 45-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Hoopstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 October 2026.

Enquiries on the case can be directed to Sergeant Palesa Thabana on 079 528 4811, the police said.

The statement is a summary of the police account rather than the case record itself. The allegations against the suspect have not been tested in court. The source document is available at https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=72014.
