Niekerkshoop man who beat and kicked his girlfriend gets five years
Caswill Moos was declared unfit to possess a firearm after the Griekwastad Regional Court convicted him of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
A 34-year-old man from Niekerkshoop in the Northern Cape has been convicted and sentenced for assaulting his girlfriend, in a case the Pixley ka Seme District management has welcomed as a demonstration that domestic violence cases can be brought to court and won.
Caswill Moos was sentenced by the Regional Court sitting in Griekwastad to five years’ imprisonment, with two years suspended for five years. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
The assault happened on 30 October 2025. According to the South African Police Service account of the incident, the 31-year-old victim and Moos were socialising at the home of a friend. When they returned to their residence, Moos beat and kicked her. She managed to flee the house and get help from neighbours.
A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened, and the investigation was led by Detective Constable Emily Swartz of the Niekerkshoop Detective Unit. Moos was arrested and charged.
Swartz was commended by the district for a diligent investigation that contributed to the conviction and sentence. In the police service’s words, her efforts ensured that the perpetrator was held accountable and that justice was served for the victim.
The SAPS statement says the service remains committed to addressing domestic violence and gender-based violence, and will continue to ensure that perpetrators are brought before the courts. This account is drawn from the police media statement rather than the court record itself, and the sentence as described is five years with two suspended.
The case is a reminder of the route a domestic violence complaint can take when it is investigated and prosecuted. It also shows the limits of that route. A suspended portion of a sentence is served outside prison unless the conditions of the suspension are breached, and the outcome depended on a victim who could flee and on neighbours who responded.
Anyone who needs help with domestic violence can contact the SAPS emergency number 10111 or the national gender-based violence command centre on 0800 428 428.
