A 40-year-old Turkish national wanted in Türkiye on charges of rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been arrested in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal, and has begun the long road toward extradition.

As IOL reported on 4 October, the man was taken into custody during a coordinated operation on Thursday and appeared before the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court the following day, where the government of Türkiye formally began proceedings to have him returned to stand trial.

The operation was run by Interpol South Africa’s Fugitive Investigation Team, supported by Crime Intelligence, Isipingo police and private security.

The charges against him were first laid with the Eskişehir Police Department in Türkiye. According to information supplied by Turkish authorities, the man is alleged to have kidnapped his then-fiancée in 2010 and raped her over several days. He is also alleged to have assaulted her by repeatedly striking her head against a wall, causing what Turkish authorities describe as permanent physical and psychological impairment. She was 22 years old at the time of the alleged offences.

He is alleged to have left Türkiye afterwards and was later traced to Isipingo.

After receiving the extradition request from Turkish authorities, the Interpol National Central Bureau in Pretoria obtained and executed a warrant under Section 5(1)(b) of the relevant legislation, which is what allowed the arrest to proceed.

The SAPS said afterwards that it continues to strengthen international law enforcement cooperation through Interpol structures, which it said allows the tracing and arrest of wanted people who cross borders to evade justice.

For South African readers, the mechanics are worth understanding. Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Pretoria is the country’s single point of contact with the global police network, and it is staffed by South African police officers. A request from a foreign country does not by itself give SAPS the power to arrest anyone. A magistrate has to be satisfied that there is a lawful basis, and that is what the warrant under Section 5(1)(b) of the extradition legislation provides. The suspect’s appearance in the Umlazi court is the start of a judicial process, not the end of one. Extradition hearings in South Africa routinely take months, and a person is entitled to contest the request.

This is the second arrest of a Turkish fugitive in South Africa in under a month. On Monday, 21 September 2026, a former primary school principal wanted in Türkiye on charges of sexual assault, kidnapping and intimidation involving a nine-year-old victim was arrested in Cape Town and has since appeared before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court.

Taken together, the two cases show a working channel between Pretoria and Ankara that has produced results in a short space of time. South Africa has no extradition treaty obligation that automatically delivers a suspect to a foreign court, and the process depends on the quality of the request, the evidence attached to it and the willingness of the local police to trace a person who has no intention of being found. In both of these cases, that chain held.

The charges in the Isipingo matter are allegations. The man has not been convicted of anything in South Africa, and the extradition proceedings will determine whether he is sent to Türkiye to face trial there. Nothing in the court process so far establishes guilt.
