A father has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his 15-year-old daughter in August 2020, the South African Police Service said on Tuesday.

The Bethlehem Regional Court handed down the sentence after a conviction secured with the help of the Bethlehem Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. DNA results linked the accused to the crime, the police said, and the case was finalised on that evidence.

Prosecutor Vusumzi Nhlapho led the case, Magistrate L. Mpama presided, and Detective Constable Khehle Mosikili investigated it.

Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, the Free State provincial commissioner, welcomed the life term and commended the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their work. He said sexual offences, particularly those committed against children by people entrusted with their care and protection, will not be tolerated.
