A 15-year-old boy from KwaLindile has been arrested for unlawful possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, taken from the same locality while it was parked inside a garage in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The South African Police Service said the arrest came after Mthatha Central Police Station’s Crime Prevention Unit was told the vehicle had been stolen and tracked it down. The car was spotted near Mthatha Ultra City and was stopped. The driver, a 15-year-old boy, was immediately arrested. Police put the time of the theft at about 02:00 on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.

A probation officer was consulted and the documents required for children in conflict with the law were completed. The boy was transferred to a youth centre and is due to appear before a children’s court to face his charges.

The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, said the arrest had come as a shock to him. “It is so shocking that a minor who is supposed to be at school being moulded for a brighter future is found in conflict with the law,” Modishana said, expressing his disappointment at the boy’s conduct.

SAPS released the details in a media statement issued through the Office of the Provincial Commissioner for the Eastern Cape and credited to Captain Welile Matyolo. The statement does not name the boy, in line with the protection the law gives to children accused of offences, and it records no further arrests in connection with the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the case can contact Captain Welile Matyolo on 079 890 0742. The statement is available on the SAPS newsroom at https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=71849.
