A former police sergeant has been arrested in Botshabelo on charges of kidnapping, extortion, impersonating a police official and theft of a motor vehicle, the South African Police Service said on 3 November.

The 33-year-old suspect was picked up in an intelligence-driven operation by the Mangaung Metro District Operational Command Centre Crime Combating Unit. He is expected to appear before the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court soon on those four charges.

What police established alongside the arrest is that the suspect was already out on bail. The SAPS statement says he was still on bail of R10 000 for business robbery in Ladybrand.

That detail sits at the centre of a case that combines the crimes police group under trio crimes with the specific offence of pretending to be an officer. Kidnapping and extortion are the two charges that carry the heaviest weight in the list, and impersonating a police official is the one that speaks to how the others are alleged to have been carried out.

The arrest came from the crime combating unit attached to the Mangaung Metro district, which covers Botshabelo, a Free State town east of Bloemfontein. Police have not said how long the operation had been running, what led them to the suspect, or whether anyone else is being sought in connection with the same set of charges.

They have also not said when exactly the court appearance will take place, beyond describing it as soon.

The case is one of a series in which the SAPS flags extortion alongside kidnapping, and the service attached its #FightAgainstExtortion tag to the announcement. The same post carries the service’s #TrioCrimes tag, the category police use for robbery, house robbery and carjacking.

A photograph accompanied the police post. The service did not name the suspect, and The Enquirer is not naming him either, because he has not yet appeared in court on these charges.

What is on the record is the charge sheet as police have described it, the court the case is headed for, and the existing bail in Ladybrand. Whether that bail is withdrawn, extended or left untouched is a question for the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court when the matter is called.

The Enquirer is following the case and will report what the court records when the suspect appears.
