Zeerust sewage: FF Plus takes Ramotshere Moiloa municipality to the Green Scorpions
The party says years of requests to municipal management went unanswered, and it now wants the environmental watchdog to act on ongoing sewage pollution in Zeerust and Groot Marico.
Freedom Front Plus has laid an official complaint with the Green Scorpions against the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality over ongoing sewage pollution in Zeerust and the surrounding area.
The party’s branch in the municipality, which serves Zeerust and Groot Marico in the North West, says the pollution is the result of what it calls sheer municipal negligence. It says the complaint follows numerous requests to municipal management to intervene and protect the community’s quality of life.
The Green Scorpions are the environmental enforcement unit within the national and provincial environment departments, and a complaint to them asks the regulator to investigate rather than settles anything by itself. The party has not said what it wants the unit to do beyond acting on the pollution.
The municipality is ANC-controlled. The Freedom Front Plus announcement did not set out how long the pollution has persisted, what the sewage has affected, or what response, if any, it has had from the municipality or the provincial environment authority.
The party said the full statement was available through a link in its post.
