The provincial government is using its official X account to push accreditation, promising a gear starter kit and funding of up to R10,000 for watches that register.

Neighbourhood watches in the Western Cape are being offered free training, up to R10,000 in funding and a gear starter kit if they sign up for provincial accreditation.

The Western Cape Government posted the offer on its official X account on Thursday, inviting residents to “team up” with the province to make their communities safer and linking to an online registration page.

The post names three things an accredited watch receives: free training, funding of up to R10,000, and a starter kit of equipment. It does not set out the criteria for the funding, whether the R10,000 is a ceiling per watch or per application, or how long registration stays open.

The offer is framed around accreditation, the formal process by which a neighbourhood watch is recognised by the province. The post does not explain what accreditation requires of a watch, or what obligations come with the money and equipment.

The Enquirer has not independently confirmed the terms of the scheme beyond the government’s own post.

Residents who want to take it up are directed to the registration link carried in the post.
