Four people were arrested after police found a suspected drug laboratory in a back room of a family house in Meadowlands, Soweto, the South African Police Service said.

The Gauteng Organised Crime Investigations tracing and narcotics teams, working with Police Emergency Services Flexi and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, arrested the four on Friday, 16 October 2026.

According to the police statement, the team received information about suspected drug-related activity at the premises and ran surveillance on the evening of 15 October 2026. Further information indicated the suspects might be in the process of moving suspected drugs, and the team went to the house, where the four were arrested.

Police describe the premises as a family residence and say the suspected manufacturing operation was found in a room at the back of the house. Equipment and chemicals found there will be seized for further investigation and analysis. A substantial quantity of pills, suspected to have been manufactured elsewhere, was also found.

The Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management unit was mobilised and is processing the scene.

The four suspects are aged between 21 and 25. Police say they are expected to appear in court soon on drug-related charges.

The case has been handed to the DPCI Hawks for further investigation.

The statement was issued by the office of the provincial commissioner for the Free State.
