Power was being restored to Zone 13, Ward 32, Sebokeng on Tuesday afternoon, with Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Emfuleni Local Municipality executive mayor Hassan Mako due to lead the switch-on of a replacement transformer.

The Gauteng Provincial Government announced the switch-on for the afternoon, framing it as part of work under the Gauteng Energy Response Plan, rolled out in 2023.

Under that plan, the province says it has been working with municipalities, Eskom and City Power to strengthen electricity infrastructure, address supply challenges and restore power to communities left without it. The province publicised the event under the hashtags #OperationKhanyisa and #transfomerreplacements.

The announcement did not say how many households in Zone 13 were affected, how long they had been without power, or what the replacement transformer cost.

For residents of the ward, the switch-on is the concrete part. A working transformer is the difference between a connected house and a dark one, and in Sebokeng, as across much of Emfuleni, the wait for that has been the daily complaint.

The provincial government has not released a schedule for further transformer replacements in the area.
