Police open intimidation case after Sandton restaurant incident
Acting police minister Faras Kachalia has asked for the businessman's immigration status to be examined, and the company he chaired says it has cut ties with him.
Gauteng police have opened a case of intimidation after a businessman was recorded on camera threatening women at an upmarket restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The man has been named as Lawrence Muingyama. Police say the complainant in the matter is known to them and that they have identified a suspect. “We are working closely on ensuring that the suspect has to be behind” bars, a police representative said, confirming that the case had been opened.
Acting police minister Faras Kachalia has separately asked that the man’s status in the country be scrutinised.
A memorial infrastructure group where Muingyama served as chairman and director has severed ties with him. The company’s decision followed the incident, which drew attention after footage of the exchange circulated.
Muingyama has apologised for his behaviour, according to the reporting. The apology has not stopped the police investigation, which remains open.
