Police in Old Eldorado Park arrested a man on Sunday night and recovered a silver-and-black 9mm firearm that had no magazine, a filed-off serial number and no licence attached to it, the South African Police Service said in a statement.

The arrest came out of a crime prevention deployment across all sectors of Eldorado Park on Sunday, 1 November 2026. Members of the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit were working alongside Gauteng Traffic Wardens. At around 21:50 they received crime intelligence-driven information about two men reportedly walking along Goud Street in Old Eldorado Park on their way to Kopper Street to buy live ammunition.

According to the information police acted on, one of the men was wearing a green Adidas camouflage jacket and khaki trousers and was allegedly carrying a silver-and-black unlicensed firearm.

The members went to Goud Street and spotted two men matching the descriptions. They approached them and asked permission to search. The search produced the 9mm firearm without a magazine. The serial number had been filed off, and the suspect could not produce a licence authorising him to possess the weapon.

He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and detained at Eldorado Park SAPS for further investigation. Police say he is expected to appear in court soon. The statement does not name him and does not say what happened to the second man.

Brigadier Maluleke, the Station Commander of Eldorado Park SAPS, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to intensifying crime prevention operations and urged community members to report illegal firearms and criminal activities.

Information can be given to Eldorado Park SAPS on 011 946-0300 or 082 444-3001. Tipsters may also remain anonymous by calling the SAPS Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111.

The account is drawn from the SAPS media statement issued by Sergeant Fezeka Khobo of the Office of the Provincial Commissioner Gauteng, available at https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=72182. It is a police summary of the operation rather than the case docket, and the charge has not yet been tested in court.
