One in ten votes counted as South Africa waits on 2026 local election results
The Government Communication and Information System says 2,538 of 23,696 voting districts are complete, with 99 of 4,485 wards and four of 213 municipalities finished.
Ten percent of votes have been counted nationally in the 2026 Local Government Elections, according to the Government of South Africa’s official account on X.
The post, published on Thursday 5 November, said counting, capturing and verification of results are continuing across the country as the Electoral Commission works towards finalising the outcome.

The figures it gave from the IEC’s live results dashboard are:
- 2,538 of 23,696 voting districts completed
- 99 of 4,485 wards completed
- 4 of 213 municipalities completed
- 119 of 8,825 council seats allocated
The government’s post directed voters to the IEC results dashboard for the latest progress.
The 2026 local government elections decide the councils of all 213 municipalities and the ward councillors who sit in them. Results are declared ward by ward and municipality by municipality, so the national percentage moves as each voting district is signed off rather than arriving in a single figure.
The post did not give a projected time for the final result, and no date for the national declaration was included in it.
