Eighteen percent of votes have been counted nationally in the 2026 local government elections, according to the Government of South Africa’s official X account, which cited the Electoral Commission’s live results dashboard.

The count stood at 4,267 of 23,696 voting districts completed. At ward level, 258 of 4,485 wards were complete, and 15 of 213 municipalities had finished counting.

Council seats allocated so far number 346 of 8,825.

The government’s post, published on Thursday, said counting, capturing and verification of results are continuing across the country as the Electoral Commission works towards finalising the outcome.

The figures are the commission’s own running tally and will rise as districts report. The post directed readers to the IEC’s live results dashboard for the latest progress.
