The Springbok court also barred the 50-year-old from owning a firearm, declared him unsuitable to work with children and entered his name in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Northern Cape for raping his partner’s 17-year-old daughter, the South African Police Service said in a statement issued by the office of the provincial commissioner.

The incident happened on 28 November 2021 in Rooiwinkel, near Okiep. According to the police account, the man supplied the girl with alcohol and then drove her to a secluded area, where he raped her despite her resistance. She escaped and reported what had happened to her family, which led to his arrest.

The trial ran for what the police described as a lengthy period and was finalised on 23 September 2026, when the court handed down the sentence. Beyond the prison term, the court declared the man unfit to possess a firearm and unsuitable to work with children, and his name was entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the Namakwa District Commissioner, commended Warrant Officer Ayanda Phillips of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Springbok for what he called a meticulous investigation and unwavering commitment to bringing the matter to a successful conclusion.

The police statement said the conviction demonstrated the importance of thorough investigations and dedicated detective work, particularly in cases involving vulnerable victims, and reiterated that the service will continue to investigate gender-based violence and sexual offences thoroughly and pursue perpetrators within the law.

Community members were urged to break the silence, report incidents of abuse and work with law enforcement to protect vulnerable members of society. Enquiries on the matter can be directed to Captain Ivan Magerman on 083 478 9317.
