IDC puts R2 million greenhouse into Capricorn TVET College campus
One of only two automated greenhouses at Limpopo colleges, it gives primary agriculture students the practical hours their course requires.
A R2 million automated greenhouse has been handed over to Capricorn TVET College’s Senwabarwana campus in Limpopo, giving primary agriculture and farm management students the practical work their programmes require.
The facility is one of only two automated greenhouses at colleges in the province, according to the Industrial Development Corporation, which funded it through a partnership with Stellenbosch University and the Blouberg local municipality. The IDC published the details of the handover on 9 March 2026.
The corporation is not new to this. It has partnered with 21 TVET colleges nationally and invested around R30 million across them, money that sits in its corporate social investment budget rather than its main funding book.
What the greenhouse is for
Students on the college’s agriculture programmes need practical hours, and the automated greenhouse supplies them. The college also plans to use it for short skills courses such as crop production aimed at young people in surrounding communities who are not in employment, education or training.
The campus is being converted into what the college and its partners call an Agro, Entrepreneurship and Rapid Incubation Hub. Youth unemployment in the Blouberg local municipality is high, and the greenhouse is intended to feed that pipeline.
Entrepreneurship development flows from our core funding mandate and we also ensure that even in our social investment activities, we encourage and facilitate entrepreneurship and self-employment skills to capacitate our beneficiaries.
That is Tshepo Ramodibe, the IDC’s head of corporate affairs. He said the corporation’s social investments are aligned with the National Development Plan and that the college partnership brings government, industry and academia together.
Stellenbosch and a Dutch exchange
Stellenbosch University trained the college’s lecturers on the facility and advised on its construction. The university has also linked the college to the Netherlands government for a student exchange programme, according to the announcement.
College principal Lekau Mamabolo said the greenhouse would strengthen the college’s contribution to community development and the agricultural sector. He thanked the IDC, Stellenbosch University, the local authorities and the departments of higher education and agriculture.
Capricorn TVET College is one of 50 public TVET colleges under the Department of Higher Education, Training, Science and Innovation. It was formed from a merger of Pietersburg Technical College, Northern Province Community College and Bochum College of Education, and runs four campuses at Polokwane, Seshego, Ramokgopa and Senwabarwana.
The college’s own account of itself is that its campuses face challenges including a lack of educational resources, ICT infrastructure and student accommodation. The greenhouse does not change any of that. It adds a working facility to one campus.
What it means for a student in Blouberg
For a young person in Senwabarwana, the practical effect is a shorter distance between the theory taught in a classroom and the crop work an employer or a buyer will ask about. The short courses are the other half of that, aimed at people who are not currently studying at all.
Whether the facility produces businesses rather than certificates is the question the college and the IDC will have to answer with numbers later. The announcement states no enrolment figures, no completion rates and no job placements, and this report carries none.
The IDC’s wider TVET footprint, 21 colleges and roughly R30 million, is the figure to watch against. It is a social investment programme, which means it is judged on what the money leaves behind rather than on a financial return.
The college has not published a date for the first intake of short-course students at the new facility.
