Harmony Gold confirms employee death at Moab Khotsong after seismic event
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is leading an investigation into the death of a mineworker at the Free State operation near Orkney.
Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited has confirmed that an employee at its Moab Khotsong mine, near Orkney, died in a seismicity-related incident on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
The company announced the death on Monday, 7 September 2026, in an announcement published on its own website. It has not named the employee.
Harmony said it extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, and that management is providing support to the family and to affected employees.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Nothing is more important than the safety of our people. We are committed to fully understanding the circumstances of this incident, learning from it and strengthening our efforts to prevent a recurrence,” chief executive officer Beyers Nel said in the announcement.
The investigation
An investigation led by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is underway. Harmony said all relevant stakeholders have been notified.
The company’s statement does not set out the circumstances of the incident beyond describing it as seismicity-related, and it does not say when the investigation is expected to conclude or what its findings will cover.
Moab Khotsong sits in the Orkney area of the Free State goldfields, a district where deep-level mining and seismic activity are long-standing features of the geology and of the operating environment.
