Gunman opens fire on ANC members walking home from memorial, four dead in Katlehong
Two members died at the scene on Gatlong Street and two more died later in hospital, while three survivors are still being treated.
Four ANC members are dead and three are still in hospital after a gunman opened fire on a group returning from a party members memorial service in Katlehong on Tuesday evening.
Quiet Gatlong Street became a scene of chaos when the shots rang out. Two members died at the scene. Two of the five wounded died later in hospital, taking the toll to four. The three remaining survivors are continuing to receive medical treatment.
The group had been at a memorial service for party members at Mobing Primary School and was making its way home when the shooting started. One member, Natin Dei, was in the middle of chanting political slogans when the gunfire erupted. Among those caught in the crossfire was a granddaughter of a woman referred to in the broadcast as Queen, who is now one of the three victims fighting for her life.
eNCA (YouTube) reported the shooting and the rising toll. The Enquirer has not independently verified the account.
Authorities condemned the attack. “We did not expect to live to lose life in this way,” a representative said. “I think everybody has the right to exercise their democratic right in terms of the political activities that they want to do. And it’s very unfortunate that we had this situation.”
Police are investigating. The state said it would work to ensure every South African can exercise political rights, campaign freely and openly, and go and cast their votes.
The suspect is expected to appear in court. The source material does not name the suspect, the court or the date of the appearance.
