A 73-year-old man has been arrested over the shooting death of his 35-year-old wife at Nkuri-Tomu village in Limpopo, in an incident police say happened at about 23:00 on Tuesday 13 October 2026.

According to the South African Police Service, Giyani police were on patrol when they received a complaint of a shooting at the village. On arrival they were met by the victim’s brother-in-law, who pointed out the house where she had been shot.

Inside the living room, police found the woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She had allegedly sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. A steel axe and ammunition were found next to the body.

Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and declared her dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations, police say, revealed that the woman was shot and killed by her 73-year-old husband. He was apprehended at the scene, and the firearm suspected to have been used in the killing was seized during the arrest.

Police state that the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage, and that domestic violence cannot be ruled out.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 15 October 2026 on a charge of murder.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has strongly condemned the killing and reiterated his stance against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

Police investigations are continuing.
