Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong has paid tribute to the heroes and heroines who fought for South Africa’s freedom, in a recorded reflection on the sacrifices behind the country’s democracy.

In the message, shared by the Government of South Africa’s official account, Morolong said their stories are a reminder of the courage and commitment that helped shape the democracy South Africans live in today.

The tribute places the country’s freedom in the hands of the people who won it. Their stories, in Morolong’s account, carry a lesson about what the struggle asked of those who took part, and what it took to build the democracy that followed.

The message was released under the government’s milestones of freedom banner, which marks the country’s democratic history.
