Free State police say the victim was sitting outside with other patrons when he was attacked with a broken beer bottle on Friday afternoon.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Boshof Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 September 2026, on a charge of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 59-year-old man at a tavern in Seretse Location, Boshof.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Free State provincial commissioner’s office, Boshof police were called to the tavern at about 14:10 on Friday, 25 September 2026. On arrival they were shown the body of the victim, who was lying motionless in a pool of blood with a stab wound to his neck. Emergency medical services personnel declared him dead at the scene.
SAPS says the suspect found the victim sitting outside with other patrons. He allegedly approached him and stabbed him in the neck with a broken beer bottle. The suspect then fled on foot. He was later traced and arrested.
The police statement says the motive for the murder is unclear at this stage.
The account is drawn from the SAPS media statement, which is a summary of the incident rather than the full case record. No plea has been entered and the charge has not been tested in court.
