Absa cuts SME onboarding to under 20 minutes and phishing response to one hour

Two Absa platforms took awards at the Middle East & Africa Retail Banking Innovation Awards 2026, and the numbers behind them are the story for South African small business.

Absa has cut the time it takes a small or medium-sized business to open an account from roughly 420 minutes to under 20, and the bank says it now clears reported phishing threats in an average of one hour instead of seven.

The two figures sit behind a pair of awards Absa took at the Middle East & Africa Retail Banking Innovation Awards 2026. The bank won Best AI Initiative for Nia, an AI-powered phishing agent, and Outstanding Client Onboarding & Account Opening for its Optimised Digital Onboarding platform. Absa announced the wins on 17 September 2026.

The awards programme recorded its largest field of participants to date, drawing international banking groups, regional institutions, digital challengers and other financial services providers from across the Middle East and Africa.

What Nia does with a reported email

Nia works on emails that staff or customers report as suspicious. The agent analyses each one and assesses whether it is benign or suspicious, then flags the cases that need a human analyst to look further. Absa describes the setup as AI combined with human oversight, so the machine sorts and the security team decides.

The effect on turnaround is the number worth holding on to. Phishing threats that once took seven hours to resolve now take about one hour on average, according to the bank, and users get AI-generated feedback on what they reported within minutes.

“This award reflects our commitment to building a secure, digitally enabled bank where trust is at the centre of everything we do,” said Manoj Puri, Chief Security Officer at Absa Group.

“Nia demonstrates how we are harnessing advanced AI to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats, while delivering protection that is seamless for our colleagues and customers.”

The onboarding change small businesses will feel

Absa’s second award covers the process a business goes through before it can bank. The Optimised Digital Onboarding platform replaces what the bank calls a fragmented, manual process with an end-to-end digital journey for SMEs.

It brings automated processing, real-time identity verification, compliance checks and connections to external data sources into one flow, cutting repetitive data entry and manual steps. Onboarding turnaround fell by more than 95%, from approximately 420 minutes to under 20 minutes, which means an SME can start transacting sooner.

That is the practical consequence for a South African small business. Time spent assembling documents and waiting on verification is time not spent invoicing, paying staff or taking on the next order.

“For us, technology only matters when it changes customers’ experiences,” said Johnson Idesoh, Group Chief Information and Technology Officer at Absa Group.

“As we build a more digitally led Absa, our focus is on using technology and AI in ways that protect customers, improve service, strengthen how we manage risk and support responsible growth.”

A South African bank selling the software it built

Both platforms were developed in-house and are now carrying Absa’s name in a regional competition against international banking groups and digital challengers. Puri described Nia as “built in Africa, for Africa.”

The two awards cover different ends of the same digital programme. One hardens the systems that protect the bank and its customers. The other removes friction for the businesses that generate its fee income. Absa frames both as steps towards its stated ambition of becoming a pan-African digital bank.

Absa has not said what the platforms cost to build, how many SMEs have completed the new onboarding flow, or whether either tool will be offered to business clients outside the group.
