Uncle who raped his 7-year-old niece is jailed for life
The Durban Regional Court sentenced the 37-year-old to life imprisonment, a year after the child told her grandmother what happened.
A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his niece, who was seven years old when the attack happened.
The Durban Regional Court handed down the sentence on Thursday, 29 October 2026, according to a South African Police Service statement issued from the office of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner.
The court heard that on Friday, 31 October 2025 the child’s uncle had been entrusted with looking after her. Police say he took advantage of that trust and violated the child, allegedly forcing her into his bedroom where he raped her.
The child later told her grandmother what had happened. The matter was reported at Chatsworth police station and a rape case was registered.
The Chatsworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and arrested the suspect. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape.
Police did not name the man in their statement, and the Enquirer is not naming him either, to protect the identity of the child. The statement is a police summary of the case and the sentencing, not the court record itself.
The statement was issued by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza. The original can be read at https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=72179.
