The National Treasury will take no investor meetings and give no media interviews from Monday, 21 September 2026 until Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The department announced the close-out period in a media statement, saying it is preparing for the 2026 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement.

Senior officials will not be available during those four weeks. The statement gives the reason plainly: preparations for the MTBPS will be under way, followed by engagements after the Budget.

The close-out is not an improvised shutdown. The National Treasury describes it as part of its investor engagement strategy, which is to say the department plans the quiet month rather than being overtaken by it.

What the MTBPS is, and why the calendar bends around it

The Medium Term Budget Policy Statement is the October statement that sets out the government’s spending plans and revenue outlook for the three years ahead. It is the point in the year when departments, provinces and state-owned entities learn what they can expect to spend, and when lenders and ratings agencies form their view of the country’s finances.

That is why the month before it is spent on figures rather than on meetings. Officials are locked into the numbers that will be tabled, and the department has chosen to say so in advance rather than leave lenders and reporters guessing why their calls are not returned.

For anyone who deals with the Treasury, the practical effect is a fixed deadline. Investors, analysts and journalists who want to put a question to the department have until 20 September 2026 to do it, and then a clear month before normal engagement resumes.

The door stays open for enquiries

The statement does not close the department entirely. Enquiries can still be sent to Media@treasury.gov.za, and the announcement itself was published through the government’s official channels under the #GovZAUpdates tag.

The National Treasury has not named the date on which the 2026 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement will be tabled, and this statement does not carry one. What it fixes is the period around it: four weeks from 21 September to 20 October 2026 in which the department’s senior officials are not available.

The South African Government published the announcement at https://www.gov.za/news/media-statements/national-treasury-announces-investor-engagements-close-out-period-21. This report is drawn from that statement, which is a summary of the department’s arrangements rather than the full record of them.

Investor meetings and media interviews resume after 20 October 2026.
