TimesLIVE has pushed out a new version of its mobile app, and the publisher says the release is built around speed, cleaner alerts and tighter control over account data.

The update, announced by the outlet, centres on performance work aimed at cutting load times on the app’s main screens. Readers who use the app to follow breaking news will notice the difference mostly in how quickly pages open rather than in any new section or feature.

Alongside the speed work, the release changes how push notifications behave, with the publisher saying users should now see fewer alerts and only the ones it judges matter most. The app also adds stronger security controls intended to better protect account data.

The new version is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, and the outlet is urging existing users to update to get the changes.

For a news app, load times and notification discipline are not cosmetic. Slow screens lose readers mid-story, and a flood of alerts is one of the fastest ways to get an app muted or deleted. Whether this release moves the needle will show up in how the app behaves on older phones and weaker connections, which is how a large share of South African readers use it.
