Three in Rustenburg court over R1,3m missing from Bojanala municipality
The Hawks arrested the trio on Sunday and say more arrests are expected when the case returns to court in November.
Three people appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, facing charges of fraud, money laundering and theft after more than R1,3 million was allegedly moved out of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality’s bank account without authorisation.
Vincent Mkhwanazi, 38, Sibusiso Kunene, 44, and Thembeka Zukula, 44, were arrested on Sunday, 20 September 2026 by the Hawks, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
According to the South African Police Service, an audit allegedly conducted by the municipality found that money had been transferred from its account irregularly, without authorisation and without substantiating documentation. The municipality allegedly suffered a financial loss of over R1,3 million.
The matter was reported to the Hawks, and the Serious Corruption Investigation unit took it up. The police service described the investigation that followed as extensive.
The three were granted bail of R1 000 each. Their case was remanded to 30 November 2026 for the arrest of additional accused.
Enquiries can be directed to Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu on 071 481 2747.
