Tembisa Hospital fraud accused back in court as SIU seizes R42.4m
Businessman Stefan Govern faces 70 charges over an alleged procurement scheme that used 75 companies to win about R600m in hospital contracts.
A businessman accused of running the syndicate behind the looting of Tembisa Hospital was back in court on Tuesday morning, eNCA reports, facing 70 charges linked to an alleged procurement fraud scheme.
Stefan Govern is described in the broadcast as the suspected kingpin of the operation. The syndicate is alleged to have used 75 companies to secure hospital contracts worth around R600 million.
About R100 million of that is alleged to have been paid to officials as kickbacks, according to the same report.
Separately, the Special Investigating Unit has secured R42.4 million in cash and assets linked to alleged bribes at the hospital. The assets include properties, pension benefits and investments tied to the scheme, eNCA reported.
The SIU is the state body empowered to recover public money lost to corruption, and the R42.4 million figure represents assets it has already taken control of, not the total value of the contracts under scrutiny.
The case returns to court as investigators continue to work through the company and payment records behind the contracts.
