South African companies running ageing software are being offered a faster, cheaper route to modern systems, with a local developer saying artificial intelligence can cut both the time and the cost that have kept many firms from starting the job.

Codehesion, which works on software modernisation for South African businesses, says outdated platforms bottleneck a company’s ability to grow. Its pitch, reported by BusinessTech, is that modernisation no longer has to be the long, expensive project that has put firms off.

The company begins a project by analysing a client’s existing systems and code to find where improvement is needed. That work ranges from tuning the business tools and software a company already uses to closing security gaps that leave systems exposed. Codehesion then fixes the biggest problems and brings the systems up to current standards.

The two obstacles it names are the ones companies know best: time and money. Codehesion says its process is significantly faster and significantly cheaper than the modernisation projects firms have avoided in the past.

At the centre of the approach are what the company calls AI-enabled innovation pods. Each pod is a full development setup covering architecture, user experience, business analysis, quality assurance, project management, DevOps and engineering. The specialists in a pod use AI to speed up their own tasks rather than to replace the people doing them.

That distinction matters for how the work is sold. Codehesion says the AI tools support its developers rather than stand in for them, and that the combination of the two is what produces results more quickly. The company describes the pod as an innovation department a business can plug in, with the aim of delivering work to international standards.

For South African companies weighing a rebuild, the offer is a familiar one in a market where budgets are tight and downtime is costly. What Codehesion is claiming is not a new product but a different economics for a job that has historically been deferred. Whether that holds on a given system depends on what the analysis finds, which is why the company starts there.

Codehesion positions itself as a partner for South African firms that need their systems brought up to date and kept there. It is taking enquiries through a free consultation, which is where a company’s own assessment of its legacy estate would begin.

The Enquirer will keep following how South African businesses approach the modernisation question, and what the work actually costs them when they do.
