South Africa is looking beyond the United States for buyers, with government saying it is diversifying export markets in response to changes in trade with Washington and pointing businesses towards the African Continental Free Trade Area and other international markets.

The position was set out in a post on X by the Government of South Africa account on Tuesday. It described the AfCFTA and other international markets as offering opportunities for South African businesses to expand trade.

The post did not say which changes in trade with the United States prompted the shift, which markets beyond the AfCFTA are being pursued, or what support exporters can expect. It gave no figures for current or projected trade flows.

For exporters, the direction of travel is the message: the United States is being treated as a less dependable market, and the continent is being presented as the alternative. The AfCFTA is the world’s largest free trade area by number of participating countries, and government has previously promoted it as a route to deeper trade among African economies.

What the post does not settle is how quickly any of that translates into orders, and for which sectors. Businesses reading it will want the detail the statement leaves out: which products, which countries, and what changes in trade with the United States are actually being responded to.
