Police in Gauteng arrested four men and recovered a hijacked Ford Ranger in Soshanguve on Monday night, according to a South African Police Service media statement from the office of the provincial commissioner.

Members of the Rietgat Crime Prevention Unit were on vehicle patrols at about 23:45 on 21 September 2026 when they received information about a hijacked Ford Ranger fitted with a tracking device. They contacted the tracking company and were told the vehicle was being tracked towards Block IA, Soshanguve.

The members went to the area and, while patrolling, found the vehicle parked on the side of the road. Four males were standing and talking a short distance away. Police approached the men and instructed them to lie down.

A search followed. Three of the suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms. The fourth was found with keys believed to belong to the hijacked vehicle.

All four were arrested and are expected to face charges including carjacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and attempted murder. The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they may be linked to other criminal cases.

Brigadier Devan Govender commended the members for their alertness and dedication, saying their swift response demonstrates the importance of visible policing and continued vigilance in the fight against crime.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon. Enquiries can be directed to Captain Johan van Dyk on 079 694 6928.
