Police seize AK-47 and pistol with filed-off serials in Ngcobo, two arrested
The Tactical Response Team acted on a tip about a homestead in Masonwabe Township and found two unlicensed firearms, both with their serial numbers removed.
Two suspects aged between 25 and 29 were arrested in Ngcobo in the early hours of 23 September 2026 for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, the South African Police Service said in a statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Eastern Cape.
Members of the Tactical Response Team acted on information about a homestead in Masonwabe Township where people were said to be in possession of firearms. On arrival, police found two men, introduced themselves and asked to conduct a search, which was granted.
The search turned up an AK-47 rifle with six live rounds of ammunition and a 9mm pistol with one magazine and two live rounds. Both firearms had their serial numbers filed off. The two were arrested on the spot and the weapons were seized for further investigation to determine whether they can be linked to other criminal activities.
The suspects are expected to make their first appearance before the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 September 2026.
Eastern Cape District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended the Tactical Response Team members for what the statement described as the sterling job of ensuring the streets are free of dangerous weapons.
