Police open two Pretoria West murder dockets as search for suspects continues

Gauteng police have opened two murder investigations in Pretoria West after a woman and a man were found dead in separate incidents a day apart, and no arrests have been made in either case.

The first body was found on Monday 14 September at about 06:45 in Christoffel Street, where emergency responders arrived at a flat and found a 25-year-old woman on the floor. She had visible bruises, and provincial crime scene management teams were called in to process the scene. The second followed on Tuesday 15 September at about 06:15, when police responded to a call on WF Nkomo Street and found a 40-year-old man with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Both victims have been identified. Police have not released the names of any suspects, and the South African Police Service has asked anyone with information to contact their local station, CrimeStop on 08600 10111, or the MySAPSApp, where tip-offs can be submitted confidentially.

What the two dockets have in common, and what they do not

The two deaths are being investigated separately. Police have cautioned against assuming a link between them, and detectives are assessing each case for patterns while forensic evidence is reviewed. That is routine practice in the early stage of a murder investigation, and it is worth stating plainly: a shared suburb is not evidence of a shared perpetrator.

What the cases do share is a location. Pretoria West sits on the western edge of the capital, a dense mix of older flats, light industry and student housing along the WF Nkomo and Charlotte Maxeke corridors. Its residents are used to a police presence, and the response times in both incidents, roughly an hour after the first calls of the morning, are the kind of detail that the community will notice.

A wider investigation in Ekurhuleni

The Pretoria West cases come while a separate and larger investigation is under way in Ekurhuleni, where the bodies of eight women have been found since July. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia confirmed the eighth case on Tuesday night. The circumstances of that death have not yet been released, and police have not disclosed the victim’s identity or the location where she was found.

The sequence of that investigation runs from multiple murdered women found in the Kempton Park area between July and September, expanding to cases in Olifantsfontein and KwaThema in Springs. Police have connected five of the cases, and a high-level multidisciplinary team led by the deputy provincial commissioner has been set up to fast-track the work. Cachalia has said police will leave no stone unturned in pursuing justice for the victims.

One of the women already identified was Elizabeth Moselakgomo, 38, who went missing after leaving her home in Rhodesfield for a jog. Her family later identified her. Athletics South Africa has called for safer environments for women to take part in sport.

The state’s response

The scale of the Ekurhuleni caseload is why the multidisciplinary team exists. It brings forensic analysts, detectives and prosecutors into one structure under a senior commander, which is the standard South African response when a cluster of cases raises the possibility of a serial offender. Five linked cases is the threshold at which that structure is normally stood up, and it has been.

In Pretoria West, the immediate police work is scene processing, post-mortem examination and witness tracing. The SAPS has not said whether the two cases are being handled by the same station or by different units.

What happens next

The post-mortem examinations will establish the cause of death in both Pretoria West cases, and the results will shape the direction of each docket. The multidisciplinary team in Ekurhuleni continues its work, and the eighth case is now part of it.
