NSFAS opens 2027 applications on 18 September and closes them on 31 October

The 2027 National Student Financial Aid Scheme application period opens on Friday, 18 September 2026 and closes on 31 October 2026. The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, launches the cycle that morning at a media briefing at 7 Anerley Rd, Parktown, Johannesburg, starting at 10h00.

The launch is built around three things the department says it wants to show: that the scheme is operationally ready, that its technology will hold, and that its customer support can carry applicants through the window. A live demonstration of the application process forms part of the briefing, run in front of the media rather than described to them.

Two dates, and one of them comes first

Applicants for 2027 funding have until 31 October. Learners who intend to enter a Technical and Vocational Education and Training college have until 30 September 2026 to apply for admission for the 2027 academic year.

That is a month earlier than the funding deadline, and it is the detail most likely to catch a learner who reads only the NSFAS date. The department’s advisory encourages eligible students to apply early and to ensure their applications are completed correctly within the stipulated period.

The person answerable, and the room he is in

Manamela holds the higher education and training portfolio, and the launch is his to front. The briefing will also give the media an opportunity to engage with the leadership of NSFAS and with student leaders, which puts the scheme’s executives and the people it exists to serve in the same room on the same morning.

That matters more than it sounds. The application cycle is the point at which every promise about readiness meets the applicants themselves, and the scheme’s leadership will be answering for the system in public.

What the record does not yet say

The advisory sets out the dates, the venue, the demonstration and the invitation. It does not state the number of applications NSFAS expects to process, the value of the funding available for 2027, or what happens to an applicant whose submission fails inside the window. Those are questions for the briefing, and the scheme’s leadership will be in the room when they are put.

What is on the record is narrower and firmer. Applications open on 18 September, they close on 31 October, TVET admission applications close on 30 September, and the scheme says it will show its readiness rather than assert it.

Who this is for

The reader who needs this is a Grade 12 learner with a phone and a household income that decides whether tertiary study is possible at all. For that reader the two dates are the whole story, and the earlier one is the one that closes first.
